In this Learning Webinar, the Director of Online Program Development, Dr. Reba-Anna Lee covered the Quality Matters Standards Rubric in depth. She focused on how the standards are defined and some of the ways they can be met in an online/hybrid course. The purpose was for faculty to gain a working knowledge of Quality Matters Standards 1-8 that will help in designing/redesigning an online/hybrid course. This was the second of two Quality Matters webinars offered by The School of Professional Studies Office of Distance Learning during the Spring 2016 quarter. The March Online Learning Webinar focused on Canvas Analytics. Jackie Wickham, instructional technologist, provided an overview of three different types of built-in Canvas Analytics for instructors: Course Analytics, Course Statistics, and the Student Interactions Report. The February Online Learning Webinar focused on Nebula, a new tool developed by Northwestern’s department of Industrial Engineering and Management Science in collaboration with Northwestern Information Technology. Nebula integrates with the discussion board in any Canvas course to build a visual network graph of the course discussions. For more information about Nebula, see this blog post. The first Online Learning Webinar of 2016 focused on accessibility. In Planning to Write for Accessibility, Christine Scherer and Krissy Wilson demonstrated a number of simple steps that designers and developers can take to make course sites more accessible. They demonstrated how screenreaders work and how to use functions that already exist within Canvas to increase accessibility.
