June’s Online Learning Webinar, hosted by instructional technologist Jackie Wickham, was a demo of Blue Jeans, Northwestern’s new web conferencing software that integrates with Canvas. Online faculty in the School of Professional Studies are encouraged to use Blue Jeans to host synchronous class meetings or meetings with students. Beginning in the Fall 2016 quarter, Blue Jeans will be the default option for web conferencing at SPS; faculty wishing to use Adobe Connect will need to request an account by e-mailing email@example.com. In this Learning Webinar, the Director of Online Program Development, Dr. Reba-Anna Lee covered the Quality Matters Standards Rubric in depth. She focused on how the standards are defined and some of the ways they can be met in an online/hybrid course. The purpose was for faculty to gain a working knowledge of Quality Matters Standards 1-8 that will help in designing/redesigning an online/hybrid course. This was the second of two Quality Matters webinars offered by The School of Professional Studies Office of Distance Learning during the Spring 2016 quarter. The April Online Learning Webinar focused on Quality Matters. Reba-Anna Lee, Director of Online Program Development, provided an overview of Quality Matters. She highlighted the program’s underlining principles, purpose and standards rubric. The webinar concluded with a preview of the second part of the series which will focus on the application of the QM rubric to online course design. Jackie Wickham, instructional technologist, provided an overview of three different types of built-in Canvas Analytics for instructors: Course Analytics, Course Statistics, and the Student Interactions Report. The February Online Learning Webinar focused on Nebula, a new tool developed by Northwestern’s department of Industrial Engineering and Management Science in collaboration with Northwestern Information Technology. Nebula integrates with the discussion board in any Canvas course to build a visual network graph of the course discussions. For more information about Nebula, see this blog post.
