In MSGH 452 (Winter 2015), Professor Moeller invited Dr. Barbra Lyle to present a series of lecture videos on innovation, health, and nutrition to the course. In addition to these guest videos, Dr. Lyle also participated in the discussion board conversations around her lectures. Assignment-Dependent Quizzing – PREDICT 401 – Professor Roy Sanford & William Guth

Graduate-level work offers students the opportunity to synthesize what they’ve learned and apply it in simulated real world situations in their assignments, quizzes, and final papers. PREDICT 401 students were offered that opportunity very early in their program, using a combination assignment/quiz pairing in which students were given a real world problem and data sets, which they then had one week to solve using methods and concepts learned that week.   This graphic was a course asset in MSGH 452. In Professor Moeller’s on-ground classes and guest speaking presentations, this single image was the basis for a lecture that could last for one to two hours, if not longer. However, such a lengthy presentation wasn’t feasible for an online class. She considered presenting the information as a live Sync Session or as a document for students to read, but after weighing the options, she and Jackie settled on this interactive graphic. Student-Led Discussions – MSGH 450 – Professor Michael Diamond and Aaron Bannasch

Student-led discussions can lead to a higher sense of community and peer engagement in online courses (Ke, Fengfeng, & Kui Xie, p. 4). In MSGH 450, students were given instructions in the course syllabus on how Team Presentations would be used to leverage multiple individual perspectives to help guide the study of course materials each week. The instructions assigned a different student group each week to create a visual presentation and a set of questions about the assigned reading materials.
